STAY UPBEAT… BUT KEEP YOUR FEET ON THE GROUND
Growth in tourism continues – but caution reigns as UNWTO reigns-in forecasts

Following several periods of upbeat expectations when it comes to growth in global tourism, prospects for this year are much more cautious.

By the same token, according to the UNWTO, experts from Africa are the most optimistic about 2019, as a number of destinations in the region continue their recovery and experts in the Middle East continue to be optimistic this year, after an already positive performance in 2018… nice to know as this issue spotlights Middle East and Africa.

The UNWTO’s projection for Africa is for 3% to 5% growth in 2019, after 7% last year, as some destinations consolidate their rebound. Prospects for the Middle East point to 4% to 6% growth, following a 10% increase last year. In both cases the projections contain a larger degree of uncertainty due to higher volatility and more limited data availability.

For this edition, we are particularly grateful to have been accorded some quality time with Oman’s Minister for Tourism, Ahmed Bin Nasser Bin Hamed Al Mahrizi, during which he imparted his nation’s “tourism roadmap”. The President & CEO of the World Travel and Tourism Council, Gloria Guevara Manzo, also sat down with us to explain she is working towards a “seamless traveller journey” – a factor that will be essential when it comes to growing tourism numbers.

Our Elite Travel Trends section features high-end gastronomy tourism, and in our Innovations and Technology pages, we examine the impact of Gen Z on tourism.

All this and more make up the current edition of the Hotel & Tourism SMARTreport – aiming to put you a step ahead of the game thanks to bringing you the right information at the right time!
