MINOR – A MAJOR FORCE

Minor Hotels leveraged ILTM to confirm its transformation into a “truly global” hospitality company with the acquisition of NH hotel group. 

In a press conference at ILTM, Michael Marshall, Chief Commercial Officer, Minor Hotels, confirmed that the acquisition increases the group’s portfolio to 549 hotels and resorts in 53 countries across the Middle East, Asia Pacific, Europe, South America, Africa and the Indian Ocean.

Following the October tender offer, together with Minor International’s pre-offer shareholding, the group secured a 94.1% shareholding stake in NH Hotel Group, at a total investment of EUR 2,327 million.

With the tender offer completed, Minor International has turned its focus to working closely with NH Hotel Group to complete integration-related tasks and to unlock value-accretive and mutually complementary benefits across both businesses, with the aim of maximising shareholder value in both companies on a foundation of financial discipline and strong corporate governance. The combined platform offers an extended product range across the combined brand portfolio with global geographical coverage.

ANANTARA HOTELS & RESORTS

Minor Hotels core luxury brand Anantara now includes 38 hotels and resorts in a diverse range of locations across the Middle East, Asia, the Indian Ocean, Africa and Europe. The brand recently launched the Anantara Private Jet Experience, an incredible new means of touring the Indian Ocean from Thailand.

Combining signature Anantara destinations, discerning guests can now travel seamlessly by private jet between Anantara Peace Haven Tangalle and Anantara Kihavah Maldives Villas, partnering with MJets, the boutique aviation brand, to enable guests to enjoy the private Gulfstream V or Cessna Citation X and curate a bespoke holiday to suit their needs.

The recently launched Anantara Experiences Campaign highlights a carefully curated collection of experiences, each distilling the essence of a destination into a relatable and accessible yet distinctive activity.

The recently launched Anantara Experiences Campaign is a brand new integrated multimedia mixed channel campaign featuring print collateral, a suite of digital assets and a cohesive social media strategy.

ANANTARA PIPELINE 2018 & 2019

Scheduled to soft open later this month in south central Vietnam, Anantara Quy Nhon Villas will be a luxury all-villa resort situated on a private beach 10 kilometres from the town of Quy Nhon. 7.2 hectares of landscaped tropical gardens house 26 one- and two-bedroom villas, each ocean facing and featuring a private pool and spacious sundeck.

A dedicated butler assigned to each villa will ensure the highest level of personalised service. Perched high on a cliff overlooking Bai Xep bay, the jungle-shrouded Anantara Spa features indoor and outdoor treatment pavilions and offers wellness programmes focusing on healing techniques such as reiki and mindfulness.

Anantara is continuing its move west and will debut in The Americas with the launch of Anantara Maraú Bahia Resort in Brazil. When it opens in mid-2019, the resort will offer an exciting new gateway to South America, following an investment of R$ 4 million in the renovation of the former Kiaroa Eco-Luxury Resort. Bringing five-star luxury with a sense of adventure to Bahia, guests of Anantara Maraú will arrive in style, jetting in by plane to the resort’s private landing strip. The resort will initially offer 30 guest rooms, suites and bungalows, followed by the resort’s expansion in 2020 which will add new guest rooms in beachfront and garden settings, some with a private pool.

In Spring 2019 Anantara will launch in North Africa with the opening of the 93-key Anantara Tozeur Resort in Tunisia. A hub for Saharan adventures, the oasis city of Tozeur rose to fame as a film location for the Indiana Jones and original Star Wars movies. The new resort will offer a very high level of luxury across a selection of guest rooms, villas and pool villas blending Tunisia’s cultural artistry and plush comforts with sophisticated modern style and Anantara’s signature touches. World-class facilities will inspire Arabian-style relaxation, lively market experiences and numerous dining options.

Scheduled to open in Q2 2019 is the 123-key Anantara Desaru Resort & Villas in Malaysia. Desaru Coast is a resort area located in Johor Bahru in close proximity to Iskandar Malaysia and a two-hour drive from Singapore. Spanning over 3,900 acres along a pristine 17 km beach facing the South China Sea, attractions in the area will include two championship golf courses, a water park, a waterfront retail village and a conference centre. In addition Anantara Lijiang Resort will open in China in late 2019.

On the Indian Ocean island of Mauritius, Anantara La Chaland Resort is under development on the south eastern coast, only 5 km from the international airport. Located on a pristine private beach, the resort will have elements of French colonial architecture and the 164 guest rooms, suites and villas, some with private pools, will be surrounded by abundant landscaping. The resort is scheduled to open in late 2019, with facilities including numerous restaurants and bars and an Anantara Spa.

ANANTARA PIPELINE 2020 & BEYOND

In Indonesia Anantara Ubud Bali Resort is scheduled to open in 2020 and will offer a total of 100 keys including suites and pool villas. Ubud’s surrounding rainforest and terraced rice paddies, dotted with Hindu temples, are among Bali’s most iconic landscapes. Also in Asia, the 150-key Anantara Jinsha Chengdu Hotel will open in 2021.

Under development in North Africa is the 150-key Anantara Al Houara Tangier Resort which is scheduled to open in 2020 in Morocco. Located along 2.5 km of beach front overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, the resort will be part of the extensive Al Houara project which will also include an 18-hole golf course

Expected to open in 2021 in East Africa, Anantara Zanzibar Resort will feature 100 guest rooms, alongside 50 one- and two-bedroom pool villas and will be part of Zanzibar Amber Resort, a mixed-use project which will also feature East Africa’s first signature golf course designed by Ernie Els.

In the Middle East three Anantara properties are currently under development. The 225-key Anantara Mina Al Arab Ras Al Khaimah Resort is scheduled to open in 2020 in the UAE. Overlooking a private beach and an eco-reserve with mangroves, the resort will offer the first Maldivian-style overwater villas in Ras Al Khaimah, along with a diverse selection of restaurants and facilities, a ballroom seating 250 and an Anantara Spa. Also in the UAE and scheduled to open in 2021 is the 233-key Anantara Sharjah Resort. The new-build property will be located on a prime beachfront location with facilities including multiple dining options, a male and female spa and wellness centre, and a ballroom able to accommodate up to 540 guests for a banquet. Anantara Jeddah Resort will be the brand’s debut in Saudi Arabia when it opens in 2022. The new resort will offer 226 guest rooms and 102 two to five bedroom villas.

Minor Hotels Announces Two New Resorts in China Under the Company’s M Collection Brand

Minor Hotels, a hotel owner, operator and investor, currently with a portfolio of 162 hotels and resorts in 25 countries across Asia Pacific, the Middle East, Europe, South America, Africa and the Indian Ocean, has signed two new management contracts in China under the company’s established M Collection brand of hotels and bespoke travel experiences.

Partnering with Zhuhai Da Heng Qin Company Limited, Hengqin Zhuhai will be the first M Collection branded hotel in China. Scheduled to open in 2020 M Collection Hengqin Zhuhai is located at the heart of Pearl River Delta along a mountain top reservoir with peaceful surroundings, and mountain views in the southern corner of Zhuhai.

Hengqin Zhuhai’s 100 keys will be a collection of suites and pool villas. The hotel will also offer an all-day dining restaurant, two specialty restaurants, a tea house and a lobby lounge. Other facilities include state of the art fitness and gym facilities, swimming pool, kids club and spa.

The coastal island of Hengqin is located only 200 metres away from Macao and the island has been selected as a new area to enhance economic ties with both Hong Kong and Macao.  A bridge connecting Hengqin with Macao and Hong Kong is scheduled to open in late 2018. When it is completed, it will take 5 minutes to drive to Macao and 40 minutes to drive to Hong Kong.

The second resort to be signed under the M Collection brand in China is a 54 key all villa resort in Hangzhou Yuhang, in the Zhejiang Province scheduled to be completed in 2022.

The new hotel will be part of the 433 hectare Lvjingtang Eco-Park which is located approximately 55 kilometres northwest of Hangzhou city centre in Yuhang district near the Alibaba headquarters and new private jet aviation centre.

The 54 keys will consist of 18 suites and 36 villas. Facilities include and all-day dining restaurant, Pan Asian themed restaurant, continental restaurant, wine cellar, VIP Club, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, a wellness centre, luxury forest mountaintop spa, an organic farm and agricultural activities for guests.

The area has rich natural resources and agriculture (farm to table) including tea plantations surrounded by mountains.   The resort’s partners, Hangzhou Lichuan Environmental Agricultural Development Co. Ltd.’s core business includes ecological conservation and plantation of eco-agriculture products.

Minor Hotels currently operates 3 properties in China under the Anantara brand in Xishuangbanna, Sanya and Guiyang and has a further strong pipeline in the region across all brands.

AVANI HOTELS & RESORTS

AVANI Riverside Bangkok Lobby.jpg2018 started on an exciting note for Avani with the announcement in March of a new brand extension, Avani+, combined with the launch of the first hotel in Luang Prabang. Avani currently operates 24 properties in 15 countries in Asia, the Indian Ocean, the Middle East and Europe, in addition to having a strong pipeline.

Each Avani+ tells its own unique story so that guests can discover a little something extra, from architecture to design to location and beyond. In addition, Avani+ introduces guests to the destination through the digital space experience for modern explorers, giving traveller’s insight into local culture, cool hotspots and travel tips about urban cities and in some cases, off-the-beaten track destinations.

Avani+ Luang Prabang is ideally situated in central Luang Prabang, and steps from the Mekong River, Royal Palace, and Night Market. As part of this renowned town which is at the heart of Laotian culture, Avani+ raises the bar on contemporary French neo-classical architecture that blends into the historical neighbourhood, as well as on French colonial-inspired interior design that enhances the modern elegance within.

In September, Avani opened its second property in Australia with Avani Central Melbourne Residences, the city’s newest upscale accommodation offering. The 55-storey residence is located within the heart of Melbourne’s CBD, offering spectacular city views from each of its 456 one- and two-bedroom apartments.

December will see the opening of Avani+ Samui in Pang Kha Bay on the southeast coast of Koh Samui in Thailand. The 58-key property will include 33 Avani Pool Villas and the brand’s signature concepts, AvaniSPA and Pantry at Avani.

Meanwhile, development has gathered momentum this year, with Avani’s growing pipeline of new-build properties underway in Asia Pacific, the Middle East and Indian Ocean. To kick off 2019, Avani Riverside Bangkok Hotel will be renamed Avani+ Bangkok while Avani Hua Hin Resort & Villas will become Avani+ Hua Hin.

Opening early in 2019 will be the 41-key Avani Berges du Lac Tunis Suites. Located in the central business and diplomatic area of the Tunisian capital, the property will offer exclusive serviced apartment accommodation options, in addition to a range of facilities.

Opening in mid-2019 will be the 382-key Avani Sukhumvit Bangkok which will be the third Avani in Bangkok. Under development in the city’s up-and-coming On Nut and Phra Khanong neighbourhoods, the hotel will be part of the ‘Century The Movie Plaza 2’ retail complex providing guests with a wide range of cinematic and shopping choices. In South Korea two Avani properties are under development – the 289-key Avani Central Busan which opening mid-2019 and the 420-key Avani Busan Hotel opening in 2020.

In the UAE, the 372-key Avani Ibn Battuta Dubai and the 225-key Avani Al Marjan Island Ras Al Khaimah Resort are both scheduled to open in 2020. Most recently announced is the 528-key Avani Suites & Branded Residences currently being developed in Dubai and scheduled to open the following year. Also under development in the region to open in 2021 is the 150-key Avani Muscat Hotel in Oman, which will comprise 160 guest rooms and suites, followed by a second phase with 90 serviced apartments.

Further properties in the Avani pipeline scheduled to open in 2021 include the recently announced 378-key Avani Kota Kinabalu in Malaysia, the 232-key Avani Gammarth Tunis Resort & Spa in Tunisia and two Indian Ocean properties – Avani Fares Maldives Resort and Avani Bel Ombre Resort in Mauritius.

TIVOLI HOTELS & RESORTS

Following its acquisition of Tivoli Hotels & Resorts in February 2016, Minor Hotels refurbished a number of the brand’s key properties during 2017 representing significant investment in the portfolio. In late 2017 Tivoli expanded into the Middle East with Souq Waqif Boutique Hotels by Tivoli joining the portfolio in Doha, the Qatari capital. Two new-build Tivoli hotels opened in August 2018, also in Qatar, demonstrating Minor Hotels’ commitment to expanding the brand outside of Portugal and Brazil into its other regions of operation.

Souq Al Wakra Hotel Qatar by Tivoli is a new five-star property blending artful Qatari tradition and top-end contemporary leisure in Souq Al Wakra, an up-and-coming seaside district just a 20-minute drive from central Doha.

The 101-key property comprises of two buildings, both former heritage houses where original character has been splendidly preserved. Facilities at the new hotel include two restaurants offering international and Middle Eastern cuisines, a shisha lounge overlooking the sea, majlis areas, meeting rooms, spa and fitness, plus a business centre.

Al Najada Doha Hotel by Tivoli offers 151 guest rooms and suites, a selection of dining options, a fitness centre, a swimming pool and a business centre. The hotel sits within a new development surrounding a large open piazza with cafes, restaurants and shops, with the hotel offering alfresco dining on the terrace. The hotel is also home to an impressive ballroom, designed to host social occasions and corporate meetings and events, with a capacity of 250 guests.

In Portugal, Tivoli recently added a new hotel to the portfolio in the historic city of Évora. The Tivoli Évora Ecoresort is a nature retreat boasting gorgeous scenery and unique cultural experiences. The 56 suite’s hotel are surrounded by age-old cork oak and olive trees. The property offers a local food restaurant, a Tivoli Spa and an infinity pool overlooking the countryside.

The Algarve Congress Centre, one of the largest and most modern facilities for meetings, conferences and events in Portugal and Europe, opened in August alongside Tivoli Marina Vilamoura Algarve Resort. It comprises of 22 meeting spaces filled with natural light, spread over a total area of ​​7,050 square metres, with a total capacity for 3,000 people. The congress centre includes a versatile plenary room, the Fénix, which features a 10-metre-high ceiling and is divisible into up to six individual rooms, plus a 700-square-metre terrace with 270-degree views over Vilamoura Marina and the Atlantic Ocean.

Two flagship properties in Portugal have recently relaunched. With a €15 million refurbishment ranging across the 285 hotel’s bedrooms, plush leisure facilities and stylish restaurant concepts, Tivoli Avenida Liberdade Lisbon Hotel brings a new aura of modernity to Lisbon, including the recent launch of Anantara Spa in the property.

In the south of the country Tivoli Carvoeiro Algarve Resort presents a number of new features after a €11 million total refurbishment. In addition to the refurbished guest rooms, the hotel now boasts three new restaurants, which take guests on a journey of discovery of this region’s exceptional and surprising wining and dining; three bars, including the new Sky Bar Carvoeiro – a must go to spot for a glamorous sunset; and the new Tivoli Spa, where guests refresh, revive and indulge both body and mind.  Also in the Algarve, the 324-key Tivoli Lagos has just reopened after an exciting new renovation, encompassing bedrooms, restaurants and leisure facilities.  

OAKS HOTELS & RESORTS

Oaks Hotels & Resorts, one of the leading providers of serviced apartments in Australasia and UAE which Minor Hotels acquired in 2011, currently includes 57 properties. Al Najada Doha Serviced Apartments by Oaks in Doha, the brand’s first property in Qatar, opened in August. The new-build property offers 100 serviced apartments with minimalist interiors and an Arabian artistic touch, in addition to a range of premier onsite facilities including an outdoor swimming pool, a fitness centre, alfresco dining, a pool bar and 24hr room service.

Scheduled to launch in early 2019, the 110-key Oaks Beirut is in the final stages of development in Sodeco, a commercial area of the Lebanese capital, approximately five minutes’ drive from the vibrant central downtown area. Bringing Oaks’ smart simplicity to a new destination, the property will provide modern accommodation with a selection of guest rooms and suites, with facilities including an all-day dining restaurant, a lounge bar & café, a rooftop pool and bar, plus dedicated conference facilities.

OTHER MINOR HOTELS NEWS

Minor Hotels started 2018 announcing the launch of Mekong Kingdoms – a fleet of unique vessels that take river cruising to the next level in Asia on the Mekong River. For the ultimate private cruise, ‘Gypsy’ is an ultra-exclusive two-cabin cruiser on the Mekong accommodating up to four passengers.

Gypsy sets sail from Chiang Khong in northern Thailand close to Anantara Golden Triangle Elephant Camp and Resort, down to the ancient Lao capital and UNESCO World Heritage town of Luang Prabang.
