Editorial |MOVING IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION
The travel industry is all about getting people moving. But not at any cost. On the one hand, it is evident that people want to have “genuine” experiences, getting off the beaten track, and experiencing all the beauty the world still has to offer. But if the very fact of them doing so spoils the place they are visiting, that is what we now know as “over-tourism”.
The increasing awareness of the effects of over-tourism is having a growing impact on how destinations are dealing with tourists in their most popular locations. An excellent example is that of Thailand, whose authorities put a total halt to the tourist “infestation” of Maya Bay, while an important impact study is carried out.
It’s a step in the right direction, and part of a larger growing movement towards responsibility and greater care for the planet.
This edition of the SMARTreport has a wide number of examples of best practices when it comes to creating surprising, extraordinary and memorable experiences for the travellers of today, and tomorrow.
Enjoy the read!
