Only a few of years ago, the idea of streaming video content was still pretty far-fetched for many hotel operators. While home users have been increasingly turning to services such as Netflix, hulu or amazon prime, in the hotel environment, a number of constraints created a braking effect to the onset of such technology in the guest room. Two key factors remain as sticking points today – notably bandwidth and rights. Indeed, the technical headaches and costs of an internet connection that enables dozens or even hundreds of rooms to connect to streaming video at the same time as other high-speed internet services are aspects that cause hoteliers to veer away from such an offering. At the same time, dedicated services including home channels for foreign visitors continue to raise questions of intellectual rights.
