Oman’s government finall y confirmed the opening of the new terminal of Muscat International Airport, a major step to position the Sultanate as an alternative global hub between Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia. The new facility will be able to accommodate 12-million passengers a year in Phase 1 and 48 million in its ultimate development phase. The first stage covers 580,000 m2 and features 86 check-in counters, 10 baggage claim belts, 40 gates, 29 lounges, 29 aircraft stands with jet-bridges as well as expanded retail and food areas. The airport is the main base for national carrier Oman Air which serves 48 destinations with its fleet of 47 aircraft. The airline is launching this year new routes to Casablanca, Istanbul and Moscow.
EMIRATES DEPLOYS SPECIAL “YEAR OF ZAYED” AIRCRAFT TO MARK FIRST INTERNATIONAL FLIGHT AT NEW MUSCAT INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT TERMINAL
Emirates was the first international airline to land a scheduled commercial flight at the newly inaugurated passenger terminal at Muscat International Airport in March 2018. To mark the occasion, the airline deployed one of its special “Year of Zayed” Boeing 777-300ER aircraft, highlighting the ties between Oman and the UAE. Flight EK 864 landed at 5:55pm on 20th March, and was the first international flight to operate to the new passenger terminal. Passengers on board came from destinations like Dhaka, Baghdad and Dammam via Dubai.
