Catamarans and ferries cross between Tahiti and Moorea several times a day. Schooners and cargo boats serve all the inhabited islands departing from Papeete. Slower cargo-style boats also service the Society Islands.
The ferry journey from Papeete (Tahiti) to Moorea – 20km to the west, takes between 25 and 40 minutes.
It’s a particularly scenic passage and is much cheaper than flying. Two companies operate the route: Aremiti and Terevau. Aremiti has two large car ferries which are equipped with snack bars and TV lounges. Aremiti and Terevau operate from the Ferry Terminal in Papeete.
The Terevau is a rapid catamaran carrying around 360 passengers and several cars. On board are also a snack bar and TV lounge area. Terevau also propose trips to Huahine and Raiatea during high season and the boat can also be rented for events. Terevau’s ship departs from the maritime station on Pomare Boulevard in downtown Papeete. Both pull in at the Moorea dock in Vaiare, on the northeast side of the island.
