GOLF IN THE EMIRATES… AMONG THE MANGROVES!

Al Zorah Golf Club opened in December 2015 – a joint venture between Solidere International and the Government of Ajman. We met with the club’s General Manager Philip Henderson at the Arabian Travel Market in Dubai, and asked him to tell us a little more about this extraordinary new project.

Troon Golf – the leader in upscale golf course management, development, and marketing, headquartered in Scottsdale Arizona – were commissioned to manage the course on the owners’ behalf. The golf course was designed by Nicklaus Design. It’s a unique product in the region as its set amongst a naturally-preserved environment of native sandy areas, lakes and some one million square metres of mangroves, so it’s really a serene, quiet atmosphere. You’re in amongst nature, which is very unusual in this part of the world, as most courses run through residential developments. We also have a tidal

system which comes in and out twice a day. At eight o’clock, you could be teeing off when the tide is out, but then two hours later, it could be 1.9 metres above sea level. There are certain areas of the golf course where we have tee boxes that are set up like islands out there… it’s a fun experience.

Where can international visitors stay?
Thankfully we have the Oberoi, which is just on our doorstep, and we have four ve-star hotels within ten minutes – the Fairmont, Kempinski, the Ajman Saray (a Luxury Collection resort), and the Ajman Palace.
