In 2015, Six Senses deviated broadly from their previous portfolio of spa resorts in Asia to open the Douro Valley resort in Portugal, and already this year, it has been selected as part of the Condé Nast traveller “hot list”… a spa resort in Portugal’s famed wine country.
Douro Valley’s UNESCO World Heritage setting fronts onto the River Douro as it winds through the world’s oldest demarcated wine region. The estate covers 19 acres with 57 guest rooms, suites and villas. Three restaurants highlight regional produce with a dedicated wine cellar featuring local vintages.
At the same time, the Six Senses Spa comprises 10 treatment rooms, indoor and outdoor pools and a gym. It presents specialty and local therapies and multi-day programs. An outdoor yoga pavilion is ideal for individuals and groups.
In May 2016, Ljubomir Stanisic arrived as the resort’s consulting executive chef. Stanisic is recognised as one of Portugal’s most creative chefs, and in 2011, he became somewhat of a national star as one of the three judges of the “Master Chef” TV show.
